Event Covers from PhotoFile

Q: What is a Sports Event Cover?

A:
An event cover is an envelope that has been canceled by the United States Postal Service on the day and in the city of an historic event. These envelopes often have a picture or story (called a cachet) related to the event. Collecting event covers, which are created to commemorate all types of historic events, has long been a special part of the stamp collecting hobby. Photo File produces event covers to commemorate great moments in sports.

Q: Why are They Collectible?

A:
Event covers by their very nature are limited editions. The dated postmarks (also called cancellations) can never be repeated. The collectibility of covers is further enhanced by the special artwork (cachet) on the envelope. The artwork can take many forms, from "silk" and every other type of printing, to hand painted one-of-a-kind works of art.

Photo File event covers are printed with a color image and text describing an MLB, NFL or NHL event. The image is most often a photograph, taken from Photo File's extensive collection, which depicts the actual moment of the event, such as Mark McGwire's 70th home run swing. These event covers so dramatically capture a historic event that many collectors use them to collect autographs, thus making the cover and autograph even more collectible.

Event covers can form the basis of larger collectibles. For example, Photo File mounts event covers and photos on a frameable mat to create a handsome combination of these two collectibles. Each cover and photo in every matted piece is related and tells a story, e.g., the 1998 World Series, Mark McGwire's 70 home runs, or John Elway's 300th TD.

Event covers are sports history! What is more collectible than an item that was actually postmarked in the city and on the date of a memorable sports event?
